The "Triple Six" Sea-Dweller Watch Review

Collectors call it the "Triple Six," and the Rolex Sea-Dweller reference 16660 earns the nickname. It's one of my favorite transitional pieces in Rolex's professional dive lineup. Introduced in 1978, this reference bridged the earlier Sea-Dweller 1665 and the later 16600, carrying design cues that speak to vintage and modern collectors alike. Here's a detail I love: Rolex kept building the Sea-Dweller 1665 alongside the 16660 for about five years, which makes this stretch of the watch's history genuinely its own and part of why it's so collectible.

What sets the Sea-Dweller 16660 apart are the real steps forward it brought to the family. Rolex improved its durability and function, adding a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, the upgraded Caliber 3035 movement, and the quickset date, which lets you set the date on its own without touching the time. The headline, though, is water resistance. It doubled its predecessor's, reaching depths of up to 4,000 feet (1,220 meters), and that's what cemented its name among professional divers. Those upgrades were a leap in Rolex's engineering, and they made the Sea-Dweller 16660 a serious tool watch for the roughest underwater work.

With this particular 16660 now over 40 years old, it sits comfortably in the vintage Rolex market. Its unusual production history also gives you two main dial variations: earlier models wear a matte dial with painted hour markers, while later ones show a glossier dial with applied hour markers. That means you get to pick between two looks within the same reference. The early matte dials feel more traditional and vintage, while the glossy dials read a bit more modern, a quiet hint at the turn Rolex was making toward its later luxury pieces.
